The French Language

The French language belongs to the Gallo-Romance branch of the Indo-European family tree, descended from the vernacular Latin of the Roman empire. The earliest French language text in existence dates from the 9th century AD, a poem about the martyrdom of St Eulalia.

The French language has approximately 113,000,000 speakers worldwide and is the 11th most common first language in the world. After English, French is the second most commonly taught second language in the world.

In Europe, French is the official language in France, Luxembourg, Monaco, and the Swiss districts of Vaud, Neuchâtel, Genève, and Jura. French is also one of the official languages of the European Union.

In Africa, the French language is spoken as a prime language in Bénin, Burkina Faso, Central African Republic, Congo (Democratic Republic of), Congo (Republic of), Côte d'Ivoire (Ivory Coast), Gabon, Guinea, Mali, Niger, Rwanda, Sénégal, Seychelles, and Togo.

The French language is also a co-official language in Belgium, and Burundi, Cameroon, Chad, Comoros, Djibouti and Equatorial Guinea, Madagascar, Rwanda and Seychelles in Africa.
